The Mountain Time Method
-
STEP 01: Intention
Dreaming up new additions to our product line is half the fun. When an idea sparks, we ask ourselves: Is it useful? Is it sustainable? How can we make it better? A lot of time is spent on the details and it shows in the end result.
-
STEP 02: Sourcing
We’re always looking for the highest quality, sustainably grown ingredients with the shortest supply chain. If it doesn’t come from nature, we don’t use it and If we can buy it local we do.
-
STEP 03: Blending
This is where we bring all the love together in one big melting pot! Our soap is made using the cold process method. Skin-nourishing oils and botanicals are mixed together with a lye solution to start the saponification process. Colors, swirls, scents and exfoliants are added at this stage.
-
STEP 04: Pouring
When the mixture reaches a texture that we call “trace”, it’s then hand-poured into each soap mold. We use custom made molds to get our unique brick-style soap dimensions that fit perfectly in the palm of your hand. Did we mention that we’ve thought of every detail?
-
STEP 05: Saponify
Saponification is a process that involves the conversion of fat, oil, or lipid, into soap and alcohol by the action of aqueous alkali. Science is cool! Sodium hydroxide is used as a catalyst to create this reaction, but none is left in the final product. That is why you don’t see it listed in our ingredients. This age-old process of soap making has been around for nearly 5,000 years and has shaped the course of human history. Soap has been said the be the yardstick of civilization and this is the core reason why we really love what we do.
-
STEP 06: Cutting
Once the soap is done doing it’s thing (becoming soap!), we then hand-cut the molds into bars and strategically place each bar on drying racks where they get airflow on all sides.
-
STEP 07: Drying
Our drying method is a slow-soap method. Once the soap is drying we wait at least six weeks for the bar to harden. This is essential to making a natural soap without hardening agents that will last once you put it to use. This is where our patience is tested, but it’s worth the wait. Because of this long aging process, we have soap batches in constant rotation.
-
STEP 08: Packaging
Once the bars harden, each bar of soap is hand-trimmed and packaged in our award wining, compostable soap box. We put as much thought into our packaging as we do in our soap. Each soap box is printed locally in Denver with plant-based inks on un-bleached compostable cardboard.
-
STEP 09: To Market
Whether it’s an in-person sale or online, we’re always grateful that you chose us. From ingredients to shipping materials, you can rest easy knowing we’re being thoughtful about our business practices and making choices to reduce our carbon footprint. We know that Mountain Time Soap wouldn’t exist without you, and we’ll continue to work hard to keep you a customer for life.
